Purpose of a Check Valve
Prevent reverse flow
Reverse flow can damage rotating equipment designed to rotate in one direction
Reverse flow in liquid applications can result in valve slamming and pressure surges with potentially catastrophic damage to piping systems
Good Piping Practice
Velocity :- optimum is 2.5-3.00 m/sec, high velocity acquaints with quick return velocity
Correct sizing of pipework and valves
Maintain 5 pipe diameters between check valve and items that disrupt flow such as pump, elbows, valves etc

Operating Principles
Opening :- The velocity of the medium is increased by the reduced valve inlet area
Velocity is further increased in the minimal flow area resulting in a low pressure area behind the disc
The increase in velocity and reduction of pressure behind the disc assists in easier opening of the disc.

The dual spring action permits the use of a lower torque primary spring to facilitate easier opening combined with a higher torque secondary spring to assist quicker closure
